Stress Management in an Hour

Stress is part of life.  Living in it doesn't need to be.

Stress is a natural response to pressure. But sometimes it hangs around long after the difficult moment has passed.  We stay caught up in the reaction — worrying, replaying conversations, feeling irritable or struggling to switch off.

Our stress response is designed for a sprint, not a marathon.

This short course helps you understand what can keep stress going and introduces practical ways to work with it differently.

You’ll explore what happens in the emotional and stress-response systems; why some reactions become automatic; and how awareness, attention and simple practices can help you interrupt familiar patterns before they gather momentum.

Why can stress be so difficult to switch off?

Finally, that difficult day comes to an end. It's time to switch off.  We know we want to wind down but sometimes the stress response has other ideas.

The mind starts replaying the day or worrying about the next day.  We become frustrated and may even judge our reactions.  The mind is busy and underneath, the body may still be on alert.

Putting pressure on ourselves to switch off or calm down can actually have the opposite effect.  It can create a friction that simply keeps our stress reaction going.

That's why managing stress is more than simply learning how to relax.

It all begins with understanding our experience - understanding what's happening.

Once we begin to understand our experience, we can learn to:

  • recognise our own patterns,
  • notice where it's possible to interrupt them
  • practise new ways of responding

That's what we'll explore together in this short course.

What's Different About This Experience?

Understanding stress is useful. But understanding alone doesn't always change our reactions. This course combines knowledge with practical exercises that help you begin putting that learning into practice.

What you'll explore

1. Stress isn't only about what's happening around us
Understand the difference between difficult circumstances and the stress reaction they trigger.

2. Balancing our emotional systems
Explore threat, drive and soothing — and notice where your own energy tends to go.

3. Why knowing isn't always enough
Discover why lasting change comes through experience and repetition, rather than simply understanding what we “should” do.

4. A different way of working with stress
Bring together knowledge, self-awareness and practice to begin noticing automatic reactions earlier.

Guided practices
Try focused-attention and settling-the-mind practices that help turn the learning into experience.

Bonus: when everything feels too much
Use a simple categorisation exercise to bring some structure to overwhelm and decide what needs your attention first.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Suzie, Project Manager, Liverpool

"Easy to follow and even in the modules your voice was so soothing"

Even in the modules your voice was so soothing.  I loved the fact that the modules were broken up and I could listen and didn't have to read anything.  Listening works better for me.  I was worried that when it came to the practices I wouldn't remember what to do, but of course when I came to them, it was really easy to follow.  I loved the course and that's coming from someone who doesn't normally do this sort of stuff.  I could see the benefit of doing it on stressful days. "

NICE TO MEET YOU

Hi, I’m Julie

I'm passionate about helping people understand stress and find practical ways of working with it.

For many years, I never really considered stress a problem, because it drove me and helped me to achieve.  But every so often, I reached a tipping point where the responsibilities I'd taken on, became too much.  That eventually led to exhaustion.

Mindfulness changed the direction of my life.  I began learning how our minds and bodies respond to stress and why we get caught up in patterns that seem so difficult to switch off.

The more I learnt about stress, the more I realised that managing it wasn't simply about trying to relax.

Understanding what was happening gave me something I'd been missing — the ability to notice the reaction earlier and work with it differently.

That is exactly what I now teach.

  2. Do I have to complete the course in an hour?

No. The teaching can be worked through in around an hour, but there is no need to do everything in one sitting. You'll have ongoing access so you can return to the material and practices whenever you want.
  3. Is this just a relaxation course?

No. Relaxation can be helpful, but this course is about understanding what keeps stress going. You'll explore your own stress patterns and learn practical ways to recognise and begin interrupting them.
  4. What if I'm already feeling overwhelmed?

The course is deliberately broken into short, manageable sections. There's also a bonus module with a simple categorisation exercise to help when everything feels like it needs your attention at once.
  5. What's the difference between this and the Bounce Back Programme?

Stress Management in an Hour is a short introduction to understanding and working differently with stress. Bounce Back is a much deeper 21-day programme, with daily teaching and practice designed to help you build the skills through repetition and experience.
