How to Grow More Joy in Your Life (Without Ignoring the Difficult Moments)

Aug 03, 2026

When life feels challenging, it’s natural to want to fix what feels wrong.

  • We search for the problem.
  • We analyse what happened.
  • We try to understand every thought and feeling.

And sometimes that reflection is helpful.

But sometimes we can spend so much time looking for the weeds that we forget to water the flowers.

The garden of our attention

Our attention is powerful.

What we focus on becomes easier for our mind to find.   This is the art of neuroplasticity.

It doesn’t mean we should ignore difficult emotions, after all, challenges are part of being human.

But it does mean we can choose to give attention to more than just what is difficult.

We can create space for what nourishes us too.

Joy doesn’t require a perfect life

Many people imagine joy will arrive when everything is finally sorted.

  • When the stress disappears.
  • When the problems are solved.
  • When life becomes easier.

But if we wait for everything to be perfect, we may miss the small moments of joy already available to us.

  • Joy can exist alongside uncertainty.
  • It can appear during busy seasons.
  • It can sit alongside sadness or worry.

Joy is not a denial of life’s challenges - it's a reminder that challenges are not the whole story.

Practising what we want to grow

Mindfulness teaches us to notice what we are nurturing, particularly when life feels stressful.

  • We notice our thoughts.
  • We notice our emotions.
  • We notice where our attention goes.

And with awareness, we can begin to make choices.

What do we want to strengthen?

What qualities do we want to bring into our days?

  • More patience?
  • More kindness?
  • More connection?
  • More joy?

Like tending a garden, these qualities grow through regular care.

Small moments matter.

  • A kind word.
  • A mindful pause.
  • A moment of gratitude.
  • A conscious choice to soften.

Joy spreads

One of the most beautiful things about joy is that it rarely stays contained.

When we bring more calm and kindness into our own lives, it affects how we meet the world.

  • Our presence changes.
  • Our interactions change.
  • We may even give others permission to approach life a little more gently.

We don’t need to become perfect.  We simply need to keep practising because mindfulness helps us to notice more joy.

So ask yourself:

  • What am I watering today?
  • What am I helping grow?

Because whatever we nurture has a way of becoming stronger.

And perhaps joy is not something we find.

Perhaps joy is something we become.
