How Mindfulness Helps You Notice More Joy
Jul 27, 2026
Have you ever noticed that when you start looking for something, you seem to find it everywhere?
Maybe you buy a certain type of car and suddenly notice the same model on every road.
Or you learn a new word and then hear it repeatedly in conversations.
The interesting thing is — those things were already there.
Your attention simply became tuned into them.
This is the power of focus.
And it’s also why mindfulness can help us experience more joy.
What we focus on grows
Our minds are constantly filtering information.
Every moment, there is more happening around us than we could possibly notice.
So our attention chooses what comes forward.
This is useful — it helps us navigate life.
But it also means we can become very skilled at noticing certain things.
For example, when we are stressed, our mind may naturally search for problems.
- What needs fixing?
- What could go wrong?
- What haven’t we done yet?
This is not a failure - it's simply how our attention works.
The good news is that attention is something we can practise.
Mindfulness trains our awareness
When we practise mindfulness, we start noticing our experience more clearly. Mindfulness helps us with those challenges in life.
- We notice our thoughts.
- We notice our emotions.
- We notice when our attention has wandered.
A body scan meditation, for example, is not about having a perfectly focused mind.
It is about noticing when the mind drifts and gently returning.
That simple act of noticing is the practice.
Over time, we become more aware of where our attention goes.
And this gives us a choice.
Becoming a joy hunter
Joy is often not missing from our lives.
It's simply waiting to be noticed.
- A moment of laughter.
- A kind interaction.
- The feeling of fresh air.
- A sense of calm after a busy day.
- A small moment where we feel connected.
These moments can easily pass by when we are rushing.
But when we pause and allow ourselves to fully experience them, something changes.
We begin to recognise joy more easily.
Creating a practice of joy
Joy is not the same as chasing happiness.
We don’t need to wait for the perfect moment.
We don’t need everything to be resolved first.
Joy can exist alongside ordinary life — even alongside challenges.
The practice is simple:
- Notice.
- Appreciate.
- Allow yourself to experience it.
This week, try keeping a joy list.
Write down the small moments that bring a sense of warmth, peace, connection, or fulfilment.
Not to force yourself to be happier.
Simply to train your attention towards what is already there.
Because what we practise noticing, we begin to see.
